Turning Toward

Turning Toward is a collaboration among SMF (Shadetree Multicultural Foundation), HPHP (Humane Prison Hospice Project), Gift of Compassion at Commonweal.  This collaboration launched on June, 6, 2020, with a ritual ceremony that invited attendees into a space of sacred hospitality to mourn, to grieve, and then to clearly see, and begin to understand the truth of our deep interconnectedness among human beings and the natural world

In the face of immense suffering connected to bearing witness to the May 25th killing of George Floyd, the emergence of Turning Toward (turningtoward.com), asked the world to stop turning away from the suffering that can be seen daily;  and to turn toward the faces and lives of those with whom we share a common destiny.  Since there were no words that could truly capture the complexity of being in the midst of a worldwide pandemic and finding ourselves virtually present for the killing of yet another African American man by law enforcement – Turning Toward offered few words but an abundance of compassion, caring, and courage to those who entered the virtual sanctuary on the morning of June 6th at 8:00 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m.  To view the two gatherings, please see both sessions at:
